Guiding the way to recovery in mental health and addictions
In wake of the opioid crisis in B.C., 91大神 (VCC) is proud to offer a new micro-credential in addictions counselling skills for practitioners in social services and related fields.
This evidence-based program is designed in collaboration with industry experts, including those with lived experiences. Professionals looking to update their knowledge and skills to support people living with addictions can expect practical training, with a focus on trauma-informed approaches, bio-psycho-socio and political contexts for models of addiction treatment, and ethical practices.
Upon completion, graduates will leave ready to support individuals in recognizing their own resilience in their path to recovery.
This program is tailored to address the unique challenges faced by addictions counsellors and social workers. Key topics include:
- Understanding the science of addiction: Gain a deeper understanding of the biological, psychological, and social aspects of addiction.
- Advanced counselling techniques: Learn practical approaches to support individuals and families dealing with addiction.
- Policy and advocacy: Explore the impact of public policy on addiction services and learn how to advocate effectively for your clients and community.
- Cultural competency: Develop skills to provide inclusive, sensitive care to diverse populations.
The duration of the program is 100 hours and will be delivered in blended format, combining scheduled online classes and self-paced readings. Key modules include:
- Foundations of trauma and resiliency-informed practice
- Care models and modalities for addiction treatment
- Addictions counselling skills
